Tess woke to the first rays of dawn light filtering through the blinds. Hannah was nestled against her belly, and Anson spooned protectively behind her with his arm cradling her and her child. Waking up like this was a first for her and Hannah. A surge of intense sensations burst through her, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to laugh, break into happy tears, or cry for what they’d been missing for her daughter’s whole life.

Together, they’d created a bubble of contentment that had carried them through the night. How could she freeze time and hold on to this moment forever? She closed her eyes and breathed in the baby powder scent of her precious child and the warm musk of the man behind her.

“I can hear you thinking,” he whispered in her ear.

A wave of tingles followed the warmth of his breath, and she trailed her fingers along the muscles of his forearm. Perhaps he worried she’d push him away in the light of day, and she probably should. But her daily ration of Nan’s matchmaking added to a large helping of Anson’s smooth ways had tempted her beyond resistance. For the first time since her divorce, she was willing to share something of herself with a man.

But not everything.

“I’m thinking...” She couldn’t just blurt out that she’d like to wake up in his arms every morning... Until she left town. “This is a nice way to wake up.”

“Should I get out of bed before Hannah gets up? I’m not sure what’s appropriate in this situation.”

A sudden tension filled her belly. “That’s something I really should’ve considered before now. If we hadn’t all been sick, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Hannah wiggled, tucked her knees under her tummy and poked her little bottom into the air.

“It’s too late now,” Tess said. “She’s awake.”

Hannah popped up like a jack-in-the-box. “Hi, Momma.”

“Good morning, sweet girl.” She smoothed the toddler’s riotous curls. “How do you feel today?”

“No owie. My chief owie?” Her chubby fingers patted his arm.

“I’m feeling much better today. Your momma is a good nurse.”

Hannah flung herself across the two of them, kissed each of their cheeks, then slid from the bed. “I play,” she called over her shoulder and scampered from the room.

Tess rolled over to face him and nestled in the crook of his arm. “It obviously doesn’t bother her a bit that you’re here.”

“She did tell me it’s nice to share. She’s very accepting.”

“If everyone had her sense of acceptance, it would be a beautiful world. She’s usually a good judge of character, too.” Tess splayed her hand on his chest and enjoyed the steady rhythm of his heart beating under her palm. Morning sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting slanted shadows. “These walls are really white. Have you ever thought about a color to warm up the room a bit?”

“Trust me. White is better than the awful pink that...they were.”

Tess pushed up onto her elbow. “Oh my gosh. This is the bedroom you shared with your ex-wife.
