Tess woke to the first rays of dawn light filtering through the blinds. Hannah was nestled against her belly, and Anson spooned protectively behind her with his arm cradling her and her child. Waking up like this was a first for her and Hannah. A surge of intense sensations burst through her, and she wasnât sure if she wanted to laugh, break into happy tears, or cry for what theyâd been missing for her daughterâs whole life.
Together, theyâd created a bubble of contentment that had carried them through the night. How could she freeze time and hold on to this moment forever? She closed her eyes and breathed in the baby powder scent of her precious child and the warm musk of the man behind her.
âI can hear you thinking,â he whispered in her ear.
A wave of tingles followed the warmth of his breath, and she trailed her fingers along the muscles of his forearm. Perhaps he worried sheâd push him away in the light of day, and she probably should. But her daily ration of Nanâs matchmaking added to a large helping of Ansonâs smooth ways had tempted her beyond resistance. For the first time since her divorce, she was willing to share something of herself with a man.
But not everything.
âIâm thinking...â She couldnât just blurt out that sheâd like to wake up in his arms every morning... Until she left town. âThis is a nice way to wake up.â
âShould I get out of bed before Hannah gets up? Iâm not sure whatâs appropriate in this situation.â
A sudden tension filled her belly. âThatâs something I really shouldâve considered before now. If we hadnât all been sick, this wouldnât have happened.â
Hannah wiggled, tucked her knees under her tummy and poked her little bottom into the air.
âItâs too late now,â Tess said. âSheâs awake.â
Hannah popped up like a jack-in-the-box. âHi, Momma.â
âGood morning, sweet girl.â She smoothed the toddlerâs riotous curls. âHow do you feel today?â
âNo owie. My chief owie?â Her chubby fingers patted his arm.
âIâm feeling much better today. Your momma is a good nurse.â
Hannah flung herself across the two of them, kissed each of their cheeks, then slid from the bed. âI play,â she called over her shoulder and scampered from the room.
Tess rolled over to face him and nestled in the crook of his arm. âIt obviously doesnât bother her a bit that youâre here.â
âShe did tell me itâs nice to share. Sheâs very accepting.â
âIf everyone had her sense of acceptance, it would be a beautiful world. Sheâs usually a good judge of character, too.â Tess splayed her hand on his chest and enjoyed the steady rhythm of his heart beating under her palm. Morning sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting slanted shadows. âThese walls are really white. Have you ever thought about a color to warm up the room a bit?â
âTrust me. White is better than the awful pink that...they were.â
Tess pushed up onto her elbow. âOh my gosh. This is the bedroom you shared with your ex-wife.
